EDITORIAL

The Proceedings of the Institute of Phonetic Sciences of the University of Amsterdam is an annual publication, intended to provide up-to-date information on current research projects in our Institute.
Proceedings 22 presents, apart from six full papers, two papers based on Master's theses finished in 1998 (Jansen; Schwippert) , and three summaries of recently defended Ph.D. theses of post-graduate students (Verdonck; Boersma; Mozziconacci) . The first two contributions are chapters of one of the Ph.D. theses (Boersma), the third (van den Dikkenberg) and the sixth paper (Streefkerk) report on ongoing Ph.D. research, the fourth paper is a chapter of a Ph.D. thesis that will appear in the near future (van Dijk) , and the fifth paper is a contribution of one of our guest researchers (Rechziegel).

The papers on current research projects in this Proceedings represent our two main research fields:

- PERCEPTUAL AND PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION OF VARIATION AND INVARIANCE IN SPEECH

- SPEECH COMMUNICATION: DEVELOPMENT AND PATHOLOGY
